RECOMMENDED GAMES
The Recommendation section is for Freeware games done by others that I believe stand out. These games are some of the best I have ever played and worthy of mention. And best of all (once again) they are free! what more do you want?
Die Slave (Megagames Review)
Die Slave (Official Site)
Die Slave is easily the best Japanese freeware shooter ever made. Side scrolling action with awesome 3D ships. Choose from 3 different ships that each allow you multiple shooting configurations. As well the bosses are incredible. The game is difficult, but the easy mode allows you 99 lives; plenty to make it through.
Perfect Cherry Blossom (GameHippo Review)
Perfect Cherry Blossom (Official Site)
Perfect Cherry Blossom is, to say the least, one of the most well done top down shooters I've ever seen. Instead of ships, you're fighting with magical girls, each with their own unique abilities. The game graphics are incredible and the attack patterns of the enemies will keep you on the edge of you seat. The game comes as an LZH file, so you'll need the appropriate unzipping program to play it. Try Ultimate Zip.
Nanaca Crash (Originating Site)
Nanaca Crash (Full Game Description)
I don't know why Nanaca Crash is so addicting, it just is. Crash a bike into a guy and send his corpse flying through the air to bounce off of other characters. Each character has a unique ability. As well you can re-hit the guy in the air and certain combinations allow for special abilities. It's fun, that's pretty much all I can say. Presented as an SWF file so you can play online.
Space Oddity (Download Page)
Space Oddity (Official Site)
An engaging and well done vertical space shooter, Space Oddity features cool 3D graphics in a 2D world and great music. It's not original music, but it fits incredibly well and adds to the game. Great boss levels too.
Cosmic (Official Site)
Cosmic is an entertaining game as it combines side scrolling action with RPG in a good way. Plus, despite the fact that the main player is equipped with a gun, violence is kept to a minimum; it's used more as a tool than a weapon. Fly between worlds to collect stars by performing different tasks, completing riddles, and playing mini-games. Great fun all around. It's worth it to check the other games on the site as well.
Hovertank 3D (Official Site)
Hovertank 3D (Download page)
Hovertank 3D (Game Maker Games Review)
Hover Tank was voted as one of the best games to be made with Game Maker at the official forums and it's not hard to see why. The 3D capabilities in Game Maker are limited, resulting in tonnes of bad 3D games, but Hover Tank uses those limitations to make a truly great game; simple shapes are used to create a pleasing atmosphere. HT3D itself is a straight forward shooter: control a tank and blast away at enemies in different 3D environments. Multiple ways to play means high replay factor. When starting out, practice quite a bit and set the accuracy of the enemies to '0' in the options, otherwise you'll find yourself blasted out of existence fairly quickly.
Re-Mission (Official Site)
Re-Mission (Play-What Download)
You might think that since Re-Mission is a educational freeware game about cancer, created by a non-profit health organization that it wouldn't be fun to play. Well, if you think that then you're wrong. Re-Mission is a professionally created 3D FPS with top notch graphics and great game play. In it you will play as a nano bot named Roxxi and travel through the human body, destroying cancer cells as well as other viruses and infections. Re-Mission easily compares to games being sold on today's shelves but it's completely free. It has quickly become one of my favourite freeware titles.
Star Wars: Battle of Yavin / Battle of Endor (Official Site)
Star Wars: Battle of Yavin (Caiman Fee Games)
Star Wars: Battle of Endor (Caiman Free Games)
I'll admit it; as a kid, and like every other kid out there, I wanted to see what it was like being in the climatic final battles of the Star Wars movies. Well, now you can with two games by the same author. Battle of Yavin recreates the final fight of the original Star Wars movie while Battle of Endor recreates the final fight of the third film. Both place you in the cockpit of an X-Wing in full 3D epic space battles, complete with Star Wars music. I couldn't have asked for more. Well, except for full ship skinning as the original games were programmed with shaded gray models. Luckily there are full Mods available on the author’s site to add detail to both games. The controls themselves are kept simple; the mouse to move, the left mouse button to fire, 'Q' and 'A' to speed up and slow down, 'Z' to change to torpedoes and 'X' to change firing style.
Iji (Official Site)
Iji (Caiman Free Games)
Every once in while a game will come along that leaves you breathless and wanting more. Iji is just such a game. At its basic level it is a shoot-em-up side scrolling platformer, but Iji has been programmed with far more than that. Along with a thoroughly engaging story line, inventive enemies and Boss battles, Iji also has many unique touches to it that add much to the game and to it's replay value. At the start choose to either complete the game as a pacifist, bypassing as many battles as possible, or as a berserker, slaughtering everything in your way. How you choose to play will alter how the game plays out. Also includes bonuses, secret weapons, and the ability to either upgrade or combine weapons to make new ones. With hours of game play you'll be enthralled for a good long time.
